A provocative, no-holds-barred, slap in the face to the traditional methods of acting, noted playwright, director and screenwriter David Mamet minces no words when it comes to the art of acting. Mamet's fierce opinions regarding various schools of acting are a breath of fresh air, and True and False: Heresy and Common Sense for the Actor is likely to polarize the current sentiments on how actors should prepare.
The main argument Mamet makes is that Stanislavski's "Method Acting" approach should be eliminated from acting schools -- and, in fact, acting schools themselves should be eliminated as well. I was blown away by the bold simplicity of his arguments, which fly in the face of everything I was taught in school. But in the end, I was won-over, as Mamet's insights are brilliant and true.
Terse and short, Mamet gets right to the point, but tends to repeat himself ... well, repeatedly ... which makes me wonder if he was really trying to hammer home his ideas, or if he was merely trying to fill pages -- the latter of which would be more surprising, considering his accomplishments as a writer.
This book obviously has a very specific audience in mind, so it is not recommended for everyone, but if you are interested in acting or are currently studying acting, pick this up. You won't regret it.

I found this series of books to be the best curriculum I have tried so far! No other curriculum can come close to comparing to the the methods and techniques taught in these books. They teach important note-reading skills and help improve dynamics and theory, while incorporating a sense of fun into everything!
The Primer level is wonderful for children ages 7-10. At that age they are so attentive, yet everything needs to be interesting and have a fun theme incorporated in it. This is so perfect for them, as it does all that.
I now use this curriculum for all my students, and they love it!

Excellent book for any Chuck Norris fan. Has lots of interesting facts and he puts lots of humor into it also. Well of course he does, it's Chuck! Each fact runs about a page or two so there real short and sweet. Also has great quotations from popular people after each fact which is very insightful. Glad I bought it and it's also a great bathroom read for guys. My friends always hafta pick it up when they come over.

This book was suggested by my current Acting coach on the first day of class. After one week I hadn't gotten it because I know tons of action verbs and I had written my own little booklet about them years ago in college so I had the info & thought I was fine. Then I realized my current coach is a genius and that this book is invaluable to all actors. I ordered it & I use it all the time. Actions plus a dictionary are two books all actors should carry with them every day. You might think that you want to manipulate someone in your scene, but you can't keep using manipulate on every line! If it didn't work the first time you need to try something else like coerce, taunt, trick, tease, jab, lure..... the list goes on. And it's really well organized so you can search by categories or alphabetically. And each word (like Manipulate) has a list of other verbs that might suit your action better. I'm so thrilled this book exists! I've only had it about a month or so & have merely cracked the surface so I know I'll be using it a very long time! Well worth the price no matter what you pay for it!

In my opinion, this is a great book for almost all ages(or who can at least understand it) to read. I read this book in free time-at least what I can read of it seeing the fact that some of its pages are ripped out-and it is very entertaining. My daughter absolutely loves the book and keeps it her room all the time. I also think that the book encourages people to get up and do something with themselves. For instance, not to sit around on the couch all day or be just plain lazy! I would recommend this book to anybody and everybody who was born in (just as it says in the book)1930 to 2000. It's a nice book and explains everything from birthdays to which constellation you were born under.. Everyone who has this book or is at LEAST planning to buy it, I hope you have the same response as do maybe even better about this book...

"Neil Young: Long May You Run: The Illustrated History"
Written by Daniel Durchholz & Gary Graff
(Voyageur Press, 2010)
---------------------------------------------
This is an impressive, lavishly designed coffee-table book devoted to the career of rock iconoclast Neil Young, from his early garage-rock roots in Canada through his LA rockstar years and more recent elevation to grunge-rock elder. The book mixes a linear historical narrative with sidebars about various feuds, love affairs and creative ventures, as well as testimonials from numerous musicians who express their appreciation for Young's talent and artistic integrity. There are also copious photographs and an astonishing array of Neil Young memorabilia -- ticket stubs, showbills, concert posters, highschool photos and other obscure items -- all drawn together in a well-designed graphic format. Predictably, the writing lapses into rock journalism formulae, but nonetheless I found it cogent and engaging -- I hadn't expected to read the book from start to finish, but was pleasantly pulled in, and certainly learned a lot about Young's career and creative arcs. (He was a Reaganite conservative in the 1980s? Who woulda thunk it?) It's a very good overview of a very complicated person, and is fairly honest and critical in its appraisal of his artistic triumphs and shortfalls.
This book will inevitably be compared to Jimmy McDonough's 2003 biography, "Shakey" (which I haven't read) but I don't think there's any need for a competition between the two; this tome is impressive in its own right, and will definitely please many a fan, particularly with the strong visual design and extensive archival materials. Check it out. (DJ Joe Sixpack, Slipcue book reviews)
